German World Cup Star joins Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmun have completed the signing of Germany internationsl Niclas Füllkrug for three years from Werder Bremen.

The centre-forward leaves Bremen with a record of 49 goals in 124 competitive appearances, having helped Die Grün-Weißen back to the Bundesliga in 2022.

The 30 year old ended last term as the league’s joint-top scorer after notching 16 goals alongside Christopher Nkunku – this followed a blistering World Cup outing with the German national team, scorong two goals in three matches in Qatar.

“Niclas has proven his scoring prowess over the years and won the goalscoring title last season. Thanks to strong performances, he is justifiably an important pillar in the national team’s forward line,” said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

“Niclas is a playmaking attacker, very strong with his head, physically impressive, convincing in one-on-one duels and unpleasant for his opponents [to face]. With all these skills, he embodies the profile we were looking for,” Kehl added.

Will Füllkrug’s acquisition be enough to deliver an unlikely Bundesliga title?

The arrival of the former Bremen forward simply means there would be an exciting battle to savor in BVB’s frontline for this new season.

The late bloomer will definitely provide an intense competition for Sebastien Haller – as well as an extra cover for the Ivory Coast international when the African Cup of Nations kicks off in Cote d’Ivoire in January.

But despite this healthy competition in Edin Terzic’s team, the ultimate goal for the club who missed out on the German title last season by just nine goals, would be to launch another onslaught once again – this time, with an experienced and lethal finisher.

How this almost impossible task would be achieved will be down to the character of the team, and majorly the tactical tweak that may be introduced in the Dortmund setup.

Füllkrug thrived excellently in a 3-1-4-2 setup last season, forming a deadly chemistry with Marvin Ducksch in a direct attacking style – of course it yielded dividends. This marriage wouldn’t have happened if it didn’t.

When the attacking forces at Borussia Dortmund gells together with the new sheriff in town, an explosive attacking display awaits the BVB faithful.

And for the 30 year old, his long term desire of taking the mantle of goals from Robert Lewandowski could be made a reality, while it could also be Borussia Dortmund’s much needed spice to land a first league title for the first time since 2012.
