Messi’s arrival was the reason I lost my job – Manchester United legend claims
Former Manchester United defender, Phil Neville has claimed that world prodigy, Lionel Messi’s arrival was the reason he lost his job as manager of Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami.
The former Red Devils defender was sacked by David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami two weeks to the arrival of Messi.
Phil Neville was at the helm of affairs when Inter Miami had a frustrating run of two wins in 13 appearances.
Inter Miami got Tata Martino to be their new head coach replacing Neville and since then the club has experienced an upward trajectory in terms of performance and results.
Messi’s nine goals in six appearances were highly instrumental in the club’s recent successes in the MLS as well as their triumph in their attempt to lift silverware this season.
Speaking via a podcast, Phil Neville said, “I always had a feeling deep down I wasn’t going to be here (in Miami) when he (Messi) was going to come to the club and I say that not lacking confidence in myself but this was different.
“This was not signing Gonzalo Higuain or Blaise Matuidi. You look around the world the way he has been at other clubs and there has always been certain managers that managed him.“The bottom line for me was forget Messi the results weren’t good enough the last month I was in the job and I knew that that was the reason I left”, Neville concluded.
