National Youth Games 2023; Oyo Chess qualifiers emerge

Qualifiers have emerged from the Oyo State Junior Chess Trials 2023 that took place at Lekan Salami Stadium Hall, Adamasingba, Ibadan. The trials which lasted for three days [August 11-August 15, 2023] was organized by the Oyo State Chess Association to select proteges that will represent Oyo state at the upcoming U-15 National Youth Games (Delta 2023) in September.

The event recorded tremendous success as 47 participants inclusive of 34 males and 13 females were in attendance.

At the end of the first stage trial which adopted a swiss format of 6 rounds with a time control of 15min + 10sec increment, Mufutau Waris (a current Oyo Junior chess athlete) won the male category while Adepoju Aanuoluwayimika won the female category.

The second stage of the trials took place on Tuesday Tuesday 15th August 2023, where the top 14 males and top 10 females contended in a knock-out classical event and saw the top 6 players from both categories emerge as Oyo State Junior representatives and reserves respectively.

The qualified male category are; Sambo Samson, Adepoju Ayomide, Mufutau Waris, Olowookere Kiiti, Sambo Joseph, and Oduola Fawaz while the female includes Ogunbayo Oluwadamisire, Daramola Michelle, Olaniyan Hannah, Adeyemi Ayomiposi, Adepoju Aanuoluwayimika, and Nurudeen Aisha.

Chess has been one of Oyo State strongest sports at the youth games, Oyo won two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the last edition of the National Youth Games.

The National Youth Games will be entering its seventh edition, it will take place in Delta between September 7-17, 2023.
