Nine men Liverpool falls to Tottenham Hotspur at the death

The biggest game of matchday seven of the 2023/2024 English Premier League season went down at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium as new Spurs gaffer Ange Postecoglou was looking to win his first home game against the Reds and end their unbeaten run.

In the early stages, both teams had their moments of brilliance as they brought good football for all fans to enjoy.
But barely half an hour into the game, English midfielder Curtis Jones was sent off for a challenge on former Brighton man, Yves Bissouma. Liverpool were hence reduced to ten men early in the game.

Spurs used this to their advantage as assist king, James Maddison played a beautiful defence splitting pass through to Brazilian striker Richarlison for a cut back to the Korean skipper, Heung Min Son who home his fifth goal of the season.

Liverpool however drew level through Cody Gakpo’s finish after a freekick from Dominic Szobozlai was headed back into the box for the former PSV Eindoven winger to slot home few minutes to half time.

Heung Min Son thought he had put Spurs ahead in the 58th minute after another cutback by Richarlison but he was denied for offside.

Luiz Diaz also thought he had put Liverpool in control after a fantastic finish but he was also denied by the offside flag and arguably a poor decision by Simon Hooper.

Liverpool were soon reduced to nine men as Portuguese striker Diogo Jota was sent off in the 69th minute of the game after getting booked twice in less than 5 minutes.

Still, Liverpool stood their ground and the stage was set for a one-all draw but it was not to be as Joel Matip turned in a well struck low cross into the box by Pedro Porro emphatically beyond Allison Becker who stood absolutely no chance.

Liverpool could not find a way back as Spurs conquered Jürgen Klopp’s side in front of their home crowd.

Ange Postecoglou has hence given Tottenham Hotspurs a win over Liverpool for the first time in 12 games. With their last win against the Reds coming far back in October 2017 which was six years ago.
