On this day; Usain Bolt sets 100m world record, wins Olympic gold medal
August 16, 2008: Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt set a new world record of 9.69 seconds when he won the coveted 100m gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.
Soon after, at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Bolt managed to once again break his own 100m world record by clocking 9.58 seconds.
Recognized as the fastest man in recorded human history, Bolt holds eight Olympic gold medals. Bolt is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100m and 200m titles at three consecutive Olympics (2008, 2012, and 2016).
